Oscar nomination as best foreign film for Pasqualino Seven Beauties by Lina Wertmuller, wooden plaque 345 x 302 mm., produced by Perma Plaque in Hollywood.
Lina Wertmuller was the first woman nominated for an Oscar as director in 1976 for the film Pasqualino Seven Beauties which also received nominations for best foreign language film, best original screenplay and best leading actor to Giancarlo Giannini. In 2019, at the age of ninety, she was awarded the Oscar for her career. The work of Wertmüller, her breakthrough films in the 70s have always been much loved abroad too and there are many reviews around the world dedicated to her. Of all her films, Pasqualino Settebellezze remains the most famous film, also due to her partnership with Giancarlo Giannini who has a form of veneration for Wertmüller as well as respect . The film garnered a Golden Globe nomination and four Academy Award nominations, including Best Director, the first ever in Academy history for a woman. It is an intelligent and ferocious apology for the art of getting by and surviving at any cost, typical of Neapolitan culture: Giancarlo Giannini is the guappo who in Naples in 1936 kills the seducer of one of his seven ugly sisters (hence his nickname ), is locked up in a criminal asylum from which he leaves as a war volunteer to end up in a German concentration camp and become a kapò.
