Specialist Notes

“In the 19th century there was an explosion of publications on roses. Histoire naturelle de la rose (Guillemeau, 1800) is published in France, a repertoire of what has already been published starting from a wide selection of poetic texts, which also brings together precepts on the cultivation of rose bushes and proposes to the reader's attention new problems such as animal magnetism to prolong the flowering season of roses: «Ne pourrait-on pas aussi prolonger la saison des roses, par le moyen du magnétisme animal?» (pp. 143-144). [Franca Vittoria Bessi, Marina Clauser, The roses in a row. Wild and cultivated roses: a story that starts from afar, 2018]
