Specialist Notes

Example in beards of this first and only edition dedicated to the Savoy coinage
Original edition of this  monumental work dedicated to Savoyard coins. In 1757 Carlo Emanuele III ordered Lorenzo Lavy, the most eminent Piedmontese engraver of the time, to dedicate a medal to each Sovereign of the Royal House. The reasons for this work were dictated primarily by the need of Sovereigns and Ambassadors to bring a gift to represent the House, and then to leave a tangible mark over time. Lavy performed 77 cones with the help of Abbot Berta for the legends of the reverses of the medals; however, due to the death of the Duke and the huge costs that the coinage required, the medals were not minted. It was on the initiative of the subjects of Carlo Felice (1765-1831) that the engraver Pietro Calmieri was commissioned to resume the medal collection project. In 1864 Luigi Torelli, Minister of Agriculture, Industry and Commerce, during a visit to the mint, noticed the unused cones and commissioned the best known engravers of the time to complete the ancient project.
