Specialist Notes

Milanese, he completed his legal studies in Pavia to then spend his life as a wealthy landowner and punctilious scholar, often called upon to act as peacemaker in the quarrelsome coterie of nobles. Authoritative and respected by his contemporaries, his expertise - often invoked in practical life - was directed rather towards resolving conflicts in peace than mutual and bloodless satisfaction. Contemporaries looked with respect at the breadth of the real and literary documentation with which Birago supported his theses, contrasting the new, somewhat more conciliatory chivalry with the rigid and conservative one of Olevano. It was one of Manzoni's sources of the Promessi Sposi, which adopted its point of view to criticize it even harshly.
