Specialist Notes
FIRST EDITION of one of the capital works of our Romanticism. Composed between the autumn of 1806 and the first months of the following year, the work was born out of the radical disagreement with Pindemonte on the problem of tombs, the subject of Pindemont's poem The cemeteries. The edict On the medical police promulgated by Napoleon at Saint-Cloud (September 5, 1806) was therefore not for chronological reasons the real starting point for the birth of the work, but it certainly contributed to the long drafting phase (after a very first serial publication in the Giornale Italiano between 23 September and 3 October) to better clarify the terms of Foscoli's position.
