Rome, Girolamo Mainardi, 1744. In 4 large. 2 parts in 1 vol. The second part with the title: The singularities of modern Rome, researched and explained. First book with aanti illustrated copperplate door, copperplate vignette on title page in red and black, 39 copperplate plates full page out of text, of which 3 folded, 1 sheet with tear without loss along the fold; II book with 2 plates, 1 of which is folded, numerous other illustrations in the text, some slight drops of water, slight reddening and foxing, few leaves with light browning, coeval parchment binding, title in gold, red edges, spine redone, some halo on the plates, slight defects. Paper ex libris on the inside cover. 


Specialist Notes

First edition of this beautiful illustrated eighteenth-century work by the antiquarian, collector and scholar Francesco de' Ficoroni (Labico, 1664 - Rome , 1747), whose name remains linked above all to the collection which included the so-called «Cista Ficoroni». Our copy is enriched by 51 double-page plates which are not part of this edition. Cicognara 3722; Fossati Bellani, 938; Olschki, Choix, 16941: "Parmi les figures gr. s. cuivre qui se trouvent dans le texte il y en a de jolies".
