Specialist Notes

The «Landscape Conference», 9-10 July 1922, was the culmination of Capri's intense early 20th-century season and the apex of Edwin Cerio's three-year syndicate. the so-called Croce law for the protection of the landscape, the first in Italy: among the main promoters there were two of the participants in the conference, the honorable Giovanni Rosadi (former proponent of the first law on the protection of the historical and artistic heritage, of 1909, called Rava-Rosadi) and Luigi Parpagliolo, for a lifetime at the Directorate of Antiquities and Fine Arts. Alongside the politicians, Cerio who was a «sparkling and versatile man of talent» (Piscopo, p. 14) calls the futurists to the conference: Italo Tavolato, who launches, in futurist style, a real «Manifesto of the beauty of Capri» ; Filippo Tommaso Marinetti who not only gives a report (Lo stile pratica) but is also in charge of literally acting as a countermelody «after so many speakers, I will seem to you a little down-to-earth» at the opening of the works; the leading exponent of Futurist architecture during the 1920s, Virgilio Marchi (Futurist Architecture); and finally the extravagant Swiss intellectual Gilbert Clavel.
The publication of the conference proceedings takes place under the banner of the «Pagine dell'Isola», first a magazine and then an editorial series directed by Edwin Cerio: the result is a book of rare sobriety and typographic beauty, printed on bearded Amalfi paper and adorned with selected illustrations. The texts included here are all in the original and unique edition. Cammarota, Futurism, VI.28; Sandomenico, Reading Capri, p. 111 (with inaccuracies); Piscopo, Futurist Capri (Naples 2001).
