Folio, 6 bound years in 4 volumes, pp. 98; 1196 (including 6 supplements); 1188 (including 3 supplements); 1196 + 3 supplements with own numbering; 1192; 392 with 385 satirical lithographs almost all on double sheet; there are two lithographs seized, but published separately by the publisher, in whose place a vibrant protest against the illegal seizure is printed in large letters: "L'ultima escapeta dalla girandola" n° 128 of 5 June 1873 and "Meditazione e comparisons" n° 92 of 23 April 1874, slight defects, coeval cloth binding, gilt title on the spine.
Specialist Notes
All the publications of this famous newspaper, papal and ferociously anti-unitary. "Voice of intransigent Catholics, “la Frusta” has as distinctive signs an aggressive tone and a style tending towards the popular, accentuated by the use of dialect". (Maiolo, "The Roman periodical press of the nineteenth century"). The founder and director, as reported by chronicles of the time, was Carlo Marini, anti-liberal and papal. For the ferocious persecution to which the newspaper was subjected with about 60 seizures and consequent destruction of the newspapers, thefts and acts of vandalism.
