Specialist Notes
Rare edition. Arias Montanus, a Spanish theologian, had collaborated with Plantin for the edition of the polyglot Bible, the collaboration continued with the publication of the Humanae salutis monumenta, a work which is described by Landwehr in his list of founding works as "the first emblem book of a Catholic tendency' (Romanic Emblem Books, p. 1). The emblems well represent the iconography of the Catholic Church and the religious propaganda of the counter-reform.
