Eye, frontispiece printed in red and black ink, woodcut initials, light burnishing, some small stains, parchment binding from a later period, leather patch with author, title and tome embossed in gold on the smooth spine, mottled cuts. Membership stamp with eyes and title pages.
Specialist Notes
First and only edition. Prosper Marchand (Saint Germain en Laye, 1678-The Hague, 1756) prestigious scholar and bibliographer, who has always been fond of books, became a bookseller in 1698 in Paris. He was editor of book catalogs, critical editor, editor of the "Journal littéraire" of The Hague, author of the "Dictionnaire historique" as a supplement to Pierre Bayle's dictionary of which he had edited an edition. He published several works that became rare which made him known among various scholars of Europe and numerous studies and essays which he enriched with precious prefaces, observations, critical notes. He left his rich library and manuscripts at the University of Leiden
