Specialist Notes
In 1860 Bronzetti decided to resign from the army to follow Garibaldi as a volunteer in Sicily. In Sicily he distinguished himself for his value, especially in Milazzo, and was promoted to captain. Having completed the Sicilian campaign, he passed the strait and went up along the peninsula; in Caserta he was notified of his promotion to major (September 1860). On 28 September he was entrusted with the task of occupying, with about two hundred men, the hill of Castel Morrone, which proved to be a point of great strategic importance in the deployment of forces for the battle of the Volturno. The B. insisted on defending it from the assault of the columns of General Ruiz, blocking them for several hours and giving a considerable advantage to the Garibaldi forces. In this stubborn defense he lost his life on 1 October 1860.
