Specialist Notes

Don Quixote is the main literary work of the Siglo de Oro, and is the most celebrated novel in Spanish literature in which elements of the picaresque genre and the epic-chivalrous novel are blended. Valuable edition edited by the typographer Joaquin Ibarra who spared no efforts in its production, excelling in typographic quality, from the specially produced paper, to the clear characters, to the magnificent tables designed by the likes of Antonio Carnicero, José del Castillo, Bernardo Barranco, Gerónimo Gil, and Joseph Brunete. The great bibliographer and scholar Antonio Palau y Dulcet, in his monumental Manual del librero español and hispanoamericano, described Ibarra's work as "magnífica edición y superior en belleza artística a todas las que hasta entonces se habían hecho en España y en el extranjero" . Opinion shared by all the most important bibliographies, from Brunet who describes the work as a typographical masterpiece, to Updike who considers it the most beautiful edition of all time, to Cohen-De Ricci who praises the ornamentation, up to Richard Ford who rightly claims that no large library should be without it!
