Visentini, in addition to being a painter, engraver and professor of perspective at the Academy of Fine Arts, worked as an architect for the English consul Joseph Smith, who financed the first edition of the Urbis Venetiarum ... , published in 1735, with 16 plates. The views in this collection were drawn from Canaletto's paintings in the collection of the consul Joseph Smith and then sold to various English aristocrats on the Grand Tour .
