Specialist Notes

It does not happen often to come across an illuminated 14th century codex, but when this contributes significantly to illuminate our knowledge of artists and historical periods of our past, then the discovery must be defined as exceptional. This code, and above all the miniature at the beginning of Part II, have allowed scholars (in this case Prof. Massimo Medica) to finally give a name to an anonymous miniaturist, the so-called "Master of the Initials of Brussels", whose origin Bolognese had long been established, but for which it was not able - on the basis of the elements gathered - to establish a certain identity. Identity that this code allows instead to reconstruct: that of Giovanni di fra 'Silvestro, the only illuminator present registered in the matriculation of 1393. & nbsp;
“Besides provide useful clues for the dating of these works [i.e. those of the Master of the Initials of Brussels] and therefore also due to the initial presence in Paris of the 'Master of the Initials of Brussels', or of Giovanni di Fra' Silvestro, the new statutes of the Confraternity of Santa Maria della Morte make it possible to establish an important chronological reference to study the moment of the artist's formation in Bologna (...)
