Specialist Notes
Conchae "As the creator and collector of enterprises, his fame crossed the borders of Siena, especially after the publication of his book On the enterprises (The first part of enterprises, Siena 1578; reprinted in Venice 1589; and" with the addition of the second and third part "and in the appendix the oration in praise of the academies and that in death by A. Piccolomini, ibid. 1594) for which the academies of the Oscuri of Lucca and of the Accordati of Genoa turned to him for the choice of their respective enterprises, while others mottos and figures he drew up for Grand Duke Ferdinand I and Henry IV on the occasion of his wedding with Maria de 'Medici. Work dictated by "a vain and frivolous noble pride that inspired almost all the Sienese aristocratic literature of that end of the century" ( Marenduzzo), the book adds to the various production on the subject (Giovio, Contile, Gírolamo Bargagli of the Dialogo de 'giuochi) perhaps only the attempt to explain more rationally the origin and true nature of enterprises. " DBI, sub vocis. 1 1594
