Venice, Heirs of Giovanni Varisco, 1596. In 8 °. Brand on the title page, woodcut friezes and initials, reinforcement on the inner margin and two small woodworm holes on the first card, light browning, slight blooms, some slight halo, small tear without loss at H4 (p.60), woodworm work on the last ones two papers, rare ink stains, slightly trimmed edges, coeval parchment binding, manuscript author and title on the spine. Membership signature and stamp on the title page.

Specialist Notes

First edition. Girolamo Menghi (Viadana, 1529 - 1609), a Franciscan friar from Mantua, was a well-known exorcist and prolific author of numerous theological writings on demonology and exorcism that had great success and spread. Having entered the Order of Observant Friars Minor, he soon began his long exorcist activity which became his major occupation. His treatise Fuga demonum contains various testimonies, experiences lived by Menghi himself as well as theoretical and practical indications on exorcisms. Despite the fame he acquired, he had to bear various criticisms from doctors, theologians, canonists and from a part of the ecclesiastical hierarchies
