Venice, Antonio Groppo, 1760-61. In 4th. 2 vols. One eye, engraved front door, allegorical vignette on the title page printed in red and black, portrait of the author, 20 plates outside the text at the beginning of each canto, 95 intaglio vignettes, subjects framed by decorated frame, rear binding in green Moroccan half with author and title stamped in gold on the smooth spine with friezes. Signature of belonging to the guard card.


Specialist Notes

Rare and splendid figurative work. Estimated edition, considered one of the best for the richness and beauty of the branches. The oval portrait of the author is taken from the famous painting by Carracci and is drawn by P. Antonio Novelli. Each of the 20 Cantos has a table referring to the text, engraved by Jacopo Leonardis from the drawings by Bernardo Castello; moreover, 95 scenes of the poem are illustrated by half-page engravings. The design of the front door, the portrait and the splendid vignettes in the text are by Novelli, all the engravings are by Leonardis.
