Paris, François Anne David, 1780 - 1797. In 4th. 11 vols. (of 12, volume XII is missing). Engraved title pages, 1339 engravings, several slightly burnished papers, slight and sporadic blooms, rare small spots, small tear with loss to the table n. 26 and 86 of volume I, at n. 124 of tome VI small hole.


Specialist Notes

First edition. The first 9 volumes were printed in 1780 (the date on the engraved title page shows 1781) and the volumes X and XI in 1797. A valuable work illustrating the findings of the excavations of Herculaneum, begun around 1738, with engravings by François Anne David and text by Sylvain Maréchal (1750-1803).
