Specialist Notes

Paul of Aegina (Aegina, 625? - 690?) Was a Byzantine physician. He was trained at the Alexandrian school and is remembered for the present compendium in seven books, full of precious information and original observations, among which the description of the operation of the bladder stone and of the inguinal hernia, which was considered classical until the end of the 17th century. This compendium was held in high esteem by Arab doctors and by the Italian medical schools of the Renaissance. The work of Paul of Aegina is the only one that allows us to know the history of surgery from Celsus up to the time of Byzantium.
