Paris, 1782. In 2nd. Volume I. One-eye only, frontispiece with vignette engraved by JM Moreau, with 102 sheets of chalcographic plates protected by vellum with engravings numbered from 1 to 126, heads and ends with refined engravings, rare small spots, a few slightly burnished cards, coeval binding in marbled calfskin, plates framed by a gold frame, title stamped in gold within a red gusset, phytomorphic friezes, gold dentelle, golden cuts, slight peeling, slight defects.
Specialist Notes
First edition of one of the most beautiful books on Greece. & nbsp; Marie Gabriel Florent Auguste Choiseul Gouffier (1752 - 1817), French diplomat, visited Greece in 1776 together with the artist & nbsp; Jean-Baptiste Hilaire. On his return to France he created this splendid work using the work of valuable engravers, including & nbsp; Huët, Choffart, Delignon, Halbou, offering the public the wonders of Greece through & nbsp; views, maps, architectural details, scenes of everyday life. The enormous success of the first volume contributed to the appointment as Ambassador of France to Constantinople, the publication of the next two volumes was interrupted by the Revolution and resumed in 1809.
