Specialist Notes
Charles Dellon (1649-1710) was a French physician, writer and adventurer. The work, published anonymously in 1687, tells the story of the imprisonment of the author accused of blasphemy by the Inquisition. Initially sentenced to death, he was then sent to galleys first in Goa and Daman in Portuguese India, in Brazil and finally in Lisbon. Although the report was banned in 1690, it had a huge circulation and was an inspiration to many Enlighteners including Voltaire. & Nbsp;
