Specialist Notes
Amadeo, fifth Earl Preziosi, came from one of Malta's leading noble families but found fame when he moved to Constantinople in 1842 and began to paint the life and views of Istanbul in all their cosmopolitan variety. The artist had created a real atelier where he painted the picturesque views of the city for the wide variety of European visitors. His works in the capital of the Ottoman Empire were bought by royalty, aristocrats and middle-class tourists.
