Specialist Notes

Interesting set of 3 works by the paleontologist, botanist and naturalist Giuseppe Monti (168 -1760). The first work was inspired by the author by the discovery on a mountain in the Bolognese Apennines of the fossilized jaw of a mammal, believed to be a walrus by Monti, but in 1837 correctly identified by Ranzani as a rhinoceros. Monti presents his discovery as a confirmation of the veracity of Woodward's theory that attributed to the biblical flood the origin of the fossils of marine plants and animals found in areas far from the sea. & Nbsp; Monti can be considered the true founder of modern paleontology in Bologna, not only for his numerous studies in this field, but also for having set up a paleontological museum in his home, the first in Italy, which he significantly called Museum diluvianum . & nbsp; & nbsp;
