Specialist Notes

Rare first edition in the popularization of the doctor originally from San Gimignano, Marco Antonio Montesiano of Dioscorides's De materia medica, one of the main sources for the history of classical medicine. The work deals with the use of natural substances in the preparation of drugs, and had immense influence in the Renaissance, so much so that most of the medical studies of the sixteenth century can be interpreted as a 'commentary' on Dioscorides. The text opens with a dedicatory epistle by the translator to Cosimo de 'Medici. & Nbsp; Ex libris glued to the counterplate. Renouard 55,142; Camerini 253. & nbsp; & nbsp;
