London, John Murray, 1894. Cloth binding with gold title on the front cover. Illustrated, with 26 maps and plans, some folded, including a folded map of Japan in the back pocket, and some full-page. Some tears on the upper margin of map n. 5. Binding slightly discolored. 

Specialist Notes

'A handbook for travelers in Japan' was first published in 1891 and went through several reprints. Basil Hall Chamberlain was a professor of Japanese at Tokyo Imperial University and a pioneering scholar of the Ainu and Ryukyuan languages. This volume, one of Chamberlain's many works dedicated to Japan, was part of the "Murray's Handbooks for Travelers" series, a series of travel guides published in London by John Murray starting in 1836.
