Milan, Dumolard Brothers, 1881. In 8°, pp. XII-(2)-390 with 26 lithographic plates f.t. depicting figures of comparative astrology, different forms of details of the human face, ethnic types, anthropomorphic idols, schematic figures of male and female beauty and ugliness, expressions of pain and pleasure, different expressions, caricatures, etc., slight flourishes. Modern binding in mz. leather, cords, tit. in gold on the spine.


Specialist Notes

Very rare original edition.Paolo Mantegazza, anthropologist, hygienist, pathologist and writer (Monza, 1831 - S. Terenzio 1910), graduated in medicine in Pavia and moved to Argentina where his long stay and contacts with the Indians they initiated him into anthropological studies. In 1858 he returned to Italy and obtained the Chair of Pathology in Pavia where he founded the first Pathology laboratory in Europe. Having moved to Florence, he established the first Italian chair of anthropology and took up teaching there in 1870. In 1871 he founded the Italian Society of Anthropology. He was the author of numerous popular works and some treatises including "Fisonomy and mimicry".
