Specialist Notes

Il Borghese is a political and cultural periodical, an expression of the cultural area of the right, founded as a weekly in Milan by the writer Leo Longanesi in 1950  and published until 1993. The newspaper resumed publications several times for short periods. The first issue came out on 15 March 1950 and contains articles by Indro Montanelli, Giuseppe Prezzolini and the young Giovanni Spadolini. From the sixth issue onwards the collaboration of Mario Tedeschi began, who would prove to be a fundamental figure for the life of the magazine. The circulation of the first two issues was 15,000 copies. Longanesi had called on both old friends to collaborate (in addition to Montanelli and Prezzolini there was also Giovanni Ansaldo, who edited the «Dizionario degli Italiani» column). As for Indro Montanelli, his active collaboration on the first issue was unique, since until the end of 1953 he remained abroad as a special correspondent of the Corriere della Sera. In its first year the magazine was composed of two parts: in the first part there were articles on the most important topics. The second part contained minor writings, columns, art and culture reviews, bibliographic and record reviews. Instead of photographic images, the pages were interspersed with drawings, friezes and art reproductions.
