Specialist Notes

Giovanni Pietro Maffei (Bergamo 1533–Tivoli 1603), Jesuit, Latinist and historian, was invited in 1579 by the King of Portugal Henry I to go to Lisbon and Coimbra to collect and rearrange the documents relating to the conquest and evangelization of the 'India, using which he wrote the Historiarum Indicarum (1588), a very valuable work for its historical content and literary form.
