Milan, for Giovan Battista Bidelli, 1628. In 8°. Typographical mark on the title page depicting a cat with a mouse in its mouth in an oval frame, in the lower center the initials GBB surmounted by a double cross, oval portrait of the author engraved by Gio. P. Bianchi, partial coloring of the title page, contemporary hardback binding. Ex libris manuscripts on the flyleaf and a printout of Dionysi.
Born in Milan, he completed his legal studies in Pavia and then spent his life as a wealthy landowner and meticulous scholar, often called upon to act as peacemaker in the quarrelsome coterie of nobles. Authoritative and esteemed by his contemporaries, his competence - often invoked in practical life - was rather aimed at resolving conflicts in the peace of mutual and bloodless satisfaction. Contemporaries looked with respect at the breadth of the real and literary documentation with which Birago supported his theses, contrasting the new chivalry, somewhat more conciliatory, with the rigid and conservative one of Olevano. He was one of Manzoni's sources for the Promessi Sposi, who adopted his point of view to criticize him harshly.
