"Perhaps the most beautiful mathematical treatise in existence; called by Hamilton, ‘a kind of scientific poem.’ It contains the discovery of the general equations of motion, the first epochal contribution to theoretical dynamics after Newton’s Principia, next to which it has been ranked", Evans. L'opera è divisa in due parti: statica e dinamica, ciascuna delle quali indirizza la suddivisione di corpi solidi e fluidi. Lagrange presenta qui la sua scoperta delle equazioni generali sul movimento applicabili ad ogni sistema di corpi, avendo migliorato i calcoli di variazioni elaborati da Bernoullis e Euler. Originariamente pubblicata nel 1788, Lagrange decise che l'opera avrebbe dovuto avere una seconda edizione che incorporasse le nuove scoperte.
