Provenance
The Boxster, designed by the American Grant Larson, was presented at the Detroit show in 1993 and launched on the market in 1996, against a backdrop of falling sales in the early 1990s. The name of the new car is the fusion of the engine type, Boxer, and the shape of the Roadster bodywork. Production began on 18 August 1996 and the first deliveries were made in October 1996; it was equipped with a new 2.5-liter liquid-cooled 6-cylinder engine in the central position, with rear-wheel drive and 5-speed gearbox or Tiptronic automatic (optional). In 2000 the first evolution of the Boxster was introduced, aesthetically the same as the previous one: the main development was the more powerful engine. The new engine is a 2.7 liter engine that develops 220 hp; torque also increases, from 245 Nm to 260 Nm. The gearbox remains the 5-speed manual and instead of the Tiptronic automatic, the new Tiptronic S is offered. The performance of the Boxster grows, with a maximum speed of 248 km/with a sprint from 0 to 100 km/h that goes from 6.9 to 6.6 seconds, while for a resumption from 80-120 km/h, in fifth gear, the declared time is 10.4". On the 2000 Boxster 2.7, passenger safety is increased by introducing side airbags. In the same year, the sports version of the Boxster S will be launched; identical in design except for the engine; in fact the S will be equipped with a 3.2 liter 250 hp engine. The model will be a success: 45% of Porsche production will be Boxster S.
