Provenance
The Vespa is a Piaggio scooter model, patented on April 23, 1946, based on a design by the aeronautical engineer Corradino D'Ascanio. It is one of the most famous industrial design products in the world and has been used several times as a symbol of Italian design. The Vespa has been exhibited in design, modern art, science & technology and transport museums around the world. It is part of the permanent collection of the Triennale Design Museum in Milan and the MoMA in New York. The Vespa 90 SS, where SS stands for Super Sprint, is a version produced from 1965 to 1971 in 5309 units and was the icon of the sport scooter of an entire generation. It had a displacement of 88.5 cm³ and 6 hp at 6000 rpm, top speed just over 90Km/h, coil spring suspension and hydraulic shock absorber on both wheels and drum brakes. At the time, the 50 version (due to the lack of driving license) or the 125 version (due to the greater power) was preferred. It had so little success as very few models were sold and still today it is one of the rarest Vespas and sought after by collectors. Characteristic is the sports handlebar, the spare wheel mounted centrally on the main rail and surmounted by a fake tank with a kind of cushion on top to reach the lying position on the track. It was produced for the Italian market in two colors, red and peacock blue, the first in two shades; for foreign markets it was also produced in white livery. There was also a small production of Vespa 50 SS destined for the foreign market, in particular Switzerland and Germany, which had the same chassis as its older sister (ie with the fake tank, the sports handlebar and the "aerodynamic" shield) but with a smaller engine.
The motorbike
The Vespa SS90 chassis no. V9SS1T*5764 was produced by Piaggio in 1970. For all SS the chassis code was V9SS1T. This Vespa 90 SS from 1970 has been completely restored in the bodywork and engine by expert technicians, accompanied by photographic documentation of the restoration. The Vespa looks like new from the stand to the saddle and from the front to the rear light. The color is peacock blue. The very narrow front shield, the handlebar inclined downwards like racing bikes, the glove box and the visible chrome muffler, made it a true sporty Vespa and it was the dream of many guys back then and still is, even if the kids have grown up. A true myth on two wheels. The Piaggio certificate of origin accompanies the Vespa.
