Literature

F. Solmi, Giuseppe Haimann , Bologna 1986, p. 82 n. 52 (ill.).
Giuseppe Haimann, son of a Hapsburg army officer of Bavarian origin, graduated in law from Pavia. During the uprisings of 1848 he participated in the Five Days of Milan, siding, albeit as a moderate, for independence. He then had positions in government offices in Vienna and Venice, before moving to the service of the kingdom of Italy at the Ministry of Grace and Justice. Parallel to his activity as a high official he always cultivated a passion for painting, a combination not rare at the time. After his studies in Brera he went to Florence and later to Rome, exhibiting regularly from the mid-1950s to the unification of Italy. In his painting we find influences of the various regional schools with which he had come into contact during his travels: the feeling of nature of the Piedmontese painters (Cappella in Campagna, lot 90) thus merges with the attention to the color and realistic data of the Tuscans (Aqueduct in the Roman Campagna, lot 88). These suggestions are found in the works created during his trip to Greece, Asia Minor and the Holy Land in 1869 (such as The Acropolis in Athens, lot 82). This first trip will be followed by a six-year stay in Egypt, at the court of the Kedivé in Cairo, where he will remain as a member of the International Reform Tribunal and as Head of Division in the Egyptian administration. His works from these years (lots 83 - 87), not intended to be exhibited, represent an important historical testimony with a clear documentary intent. In short, they appear as real reportages in painting, consisting of works not devoid of lyrical accents and great image happiness, immediate but full of feeling and imbued with light.
