Specialist Notes

The intense portrait was recognized in its physiognomy by Fernando Mazzocca, who thanks us, who traced it for the peculiar features to Maximilian of Habsburg - brother of Emperor Francis Giuseppe – whose fate was sealed by the tragic end in the campaign in Mexico, where he was shot on June 19, 1867.The sunken face, the long combed beard, thinning hair and deep blue eyes enclosed in a romantic atmosphere, make it a vertex of Central European-style portraiture, probably close to the manners of Friedrich Von Amerling (1803-1887) with whom it shares that fluidity within a precise dictation and lenticular. On the death of the person portrayed, which became a case in all the international press and especially in France since it was Napoleon III who supported Maximilian's Mexican mission, several complaints were raised and, perhaps qu the best known remains the famous canvas The execution of the Emperor Maximilian by Edouard Manet. The unfortunate fate of the Emperor of Mexico aroused great emotion and many artists found themselves portraying him post mortem, and this portrait is no exception, so much is it crystallized in a finely painted elsewhere.
