On the back, on the frame, initials G. E. and ancient inscription: 1808 / Grazioso dono del celebre Errante / al suo amico Gugliemetti.
Giuseppe Errante, trained in Palermo and then in Rome, where he has been present since 1784 in the studio of the architect Giuseppe Barbieri, he was active in Naples, Rome, Civitavecchia, Ancona and Milan, where he combines painting with the teaching of fencing in his own school, frequented by Napoleonic officers. In addition to various altarpieces and frescoes for numerous churches around Italy, there are also works of mythological and allegorical subjects. Some of the latter were exhibited among other things in Milan in 1806 on the occasion of the arrival of Napoleon, where they were admired by the Empress Josephine. His style oscillates between a late-eighteenth-century education and more properly neoclassical accents, characters that can be identified in the work presented here and perfectly in line with the taste of the time.
