Provenance

The model

The 190 SL is a two-door luxury roadster produced by Mercedes-Benz between May 1955 and February 1963. Referred to as W121 (BII or B2), it was first presented as a prototype at the 1954 New York Auto Show and it was available with an optional removable hardtop. The 190 SL was indeed an attractive and more affordable alternative to the exclusive Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, sharing its basic styling, engineering, detailing, and fully independent suspension. Both cars had double wishbones in front and swing axles at the rear. Instead of the 300 SL's expensive purpose-built W198 tubular spaceframe, the 190 SL rode on a shortened monocoque R121 platform modified from the W121 small saloon. The 190 SL was powered by a new, straight-four engine of 1900 cc for 104 hp. The type M121 BII SOHC engine was slightly over-square and based on the 300 SL's straight six-cylinders engine. It had an unchanged 85 mm bore and reduced 83.6 mm stroke, was fitted with twin-choke dual Solex carburettors. The car was available either as a soft-top convertible (initially priced at DM 16,500/US$ 3,998) or with removable hardtop (DM 17,650/$ 4,295). A small third-passenger transverse seat was optional. During its first years, the 190 SL was available also as a sports-racing model with small perspex windscreen and spartan one-piece leather-covered bucket seats and aluminium doors. In 1959, the hardtop's rear window was enlarged. The Mercedes-Benz 230SL replaced both the 190 SL and the 300 SL in 1963. During the years Mercedes built 25,881 190 SL.
The car
The chassis no. 12104010017432 is a 1961 car, imported from the U.S.A. where it was used as a private car. Originally registered with the US plate UTN347, it has been registered in Italy in March 1993, with the plate AL741541. Its first Italian owner was the entrepreneur Giorgio Deiana, in Alessandria, a well-known patron, for almost 50 years at the head of the Ferrari Group, specialised in the worldwide shipping of jewellery and luxury goods. Chassis no. Mr Deiana kept 12104010017432 until June 2006, when it was sold to the Milani car dealer in Desio (near Milano). The car, then, in recent years, arrived in the hands of its last owner. The 1961 Mercedes-Benz 190 SL chassis no. 12104010017432, refined in the classic and original combination of Ivory (Elfenbein - DB 608) and red (Rot – 641) leather interior, is in excellent conditions and correctly functioning. The 190 SL is a classic car, perfect for everyday use. Since it was built in 1961 and it has its ASI identity certificate, it is eligible to the Mercedes-Benz Mille Miglia Challenge (Grouping E: Mercedes-Benz models built from 01/01/1958 to 31/12/1969).
State of the Art: Restored. In perfect conditions and perfectly functioning.
