The model
Introduced at the 1950 Geneva Motor Show, the 1400 was manufactured by Fiat between 1950 and 1958. It was Fiat’s first post-war model and was offered with a monocoque body. Fiat 1400 was powered by a 1,395 cc (85.2 Cu-inch) four-cylinder inline petrol engine. This engine breathed through two overhead valves per cylinder producing 50 hp at 4.600 rpm. It was able to generate a torque of 85 N-m (63 ft-lb) at 3,400 rpm. Though the torque curve was not flat, it could still generate 75 N-m at around 1,550 rpm. The power was transferred to the rear wheels through a 4-speed manual gearbox. The 1400’s engine powered the 1.490 Kg (3,285 lb) car to a maximum speed of 125 km/h (78 mph). Fiat gave the car generous proportions by per European standards, measuring 4,305 mm (169.5″) long, 1,655 mm (65.2″) wide and 1,550 mm (61″) tall.
The car
The Fiat 1400, chassis no. 021597, dates from 1951. This model belonged to Pietro Alaleona, brother of Domenico Alaleona, a well-known and influential composer and musician of the early 1900s. The Fiat 1400 was a much-loved car at the time, considered the car of the well-established bourgeoisie, or of those who aspired to it, a symbol of consolidated well-being. Although for a period undervalued: collectors having often preferred more sporty or exotic car models. In recent years it has been re-evaluated and has gained a greater appreciation, in part, for its comfort and reliability, useful in long re-enactments of historic races such as the Mille Miglia. Chassis no. 021597 presents itself in a state of pure excellence, not only for the type of car but in absolute. The vehicle has matching numbers, and it has original AP12490 plate, FIVA fiche and ASI targa oro. Its bodywork has been the subject of a recent restoration, and its mechanical parts have been completely overhauled, it still mounts the functioning electromechanical rod arrow signals, has a new exhaust and many rare and custom period accessories, such as the external sunshade on the windshield (painted in the same body color), the air deflectors on the 4 windows, the "I" (Italy) metal emblem, predisposition for the luggage rack. Finally, the beautiful Autovox valve radio customised for the model, in pale bakelite finish and contrasting knobs. In recent years the car has participated in various events as well as the Campionato Italiano Regolarità Auto Storiche in 2016. A wonderful Fiat 1400.
