Provenance
The Fiat 514 was a medium-range car produced by FIAT from 1929 to 1932. It replaced the Fiat 509, and it was considered the first compact car ever built, as it was 4 meters long. Designed by Tranquillo Zerbi, it was a tremendous commercial success and was widely exported to foreign countries. It was available also in a Taxi version, the “514 L”. Three sports versions were built, all with elegant finishes, the “514 S”, the “514 S MM” as Mille Miglia and the “514 CA” as Coppa delle Alpi. The car was equipped with a 1438 cc four-cylinder in-line engine with a power output of 28 hp, a 4-speed gearbox and rear-wheel drive. The ignition was battery-powered. The standard “514” reached 80 km /h. The 514 S was also equipped with the 1438 cc engine, but with power increased by 25% - reaching 35 hp - and could exceed the "magic" 1930s limit of 100 km/h.It was built in 36,970 units and was marketed in several body versions: two and four-door sedan, two-door spiders, two-door coupes and two and four-door convertibles. It was also manufactured in Spain by “Fiat Hispania” in a factory purchased by Hispano-Suiza, located in Guadalajara. The factory was destroyed in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War and was never rebuilt. In 1950, Fiat invested substantial capital for a new production plant in Barcelona, in the “free zone”, creating the SEAT.The Fiat 508 Balilla will then replace the Fiat 514.
The car
The Fiat 514 S Spider, chassis No. 214157 is a 1930’s car. It is the "S" or Sport version with a Spider body. Not to be confused with the standard 514, nowadays also quite rare. The even rarer and more valuable Sport, in addition to the enhanced mechanics, stands out for the more slender and narrower lines and is referred to as Sport Spider. The car is matching number and has body and interior preserved. The mechanical parts, the brakes, and the electrical system and chassis have been overhauled. The working engine requires to be overhauled. The tires are in good conditions. The braking system presents a rare and advantageous SIATA modification of the time: the transformation into a hydraulic system. Revised and with Fiche CSAI, it is awaiting ASI certification. It has an original booklet and license plates (FI2872) from 1937. The Chassis no. 214157 took part in the 2018 Mille Miglia.State of the ArtPreserved coachwork, body and interiors. Overhauled mechanics and running gear. Operating engine, in need to be overhauled.
