Sliding-block bolt with typical lever opening on the back of the barrel marked "H. J. MERRILL BALTO./PAT. JULY 1858". Breechloading mechanism with percussion primer. Lock marked "H. J. MERRILL BALTO./PAT. JULY 1858/APL. 9 MAY 21-28-61" and with serial number “20xx” (also on the lever.) Walnut stock, probably with remains of a military order stamp above the sling swivel. Brass mounts and patchbox. Iron sling swivel. Some pitting and small signs of use and time.
