Gigi Riva, whose real name is Luigi Riva, is an Italian football legend, best known for his role as a striker in the golden age of the Italian national team and his club, Cagliari. Riva is considered one of the best Italian strikers of all time and one of the greatest goalscorers in the history of Italian football.
Born on 7 November 1944 in Leggiuno, in the province of Varese, Gigi Riva began his football career at Milan, before moving to Cagliari in 1963. It was with Cagliari that Riva experienced his most prolific and successful period, becoming the symbol of the Sardinian team and winning a Scudetto in 1970. With the Italian national team, Riva scored 35 goals in 42 games, a record that lasted for many years.
Riva was known for his powerful shot and his ability to strike the ball with great precision and force. He was a complete striker, able to score with both feet and to head the ball. He was a player feared by opposing defenders for his ability to create goalscoring opportunities even from the most difficult situations.

After Football After retiring from football, Gigi Riva remained involved in the world of football as a manager and ambassador of Italian football. He died on 22 January 2024.
