Considered one of the best Italian center forwards of his generation, he rose to national prominence with Palermo, with which he won a Serie B championship in the 2003-2004 season and the title of best scorer of that year's cadet tournament. In 2005 he moved to Fiorentina, where he played for two seasons and became the first Italian player to win the Golden Shoe, obtained after being the best scorer in Serie A in the 2005-2006 championship. In 2007 he was purchased by Bayern Munich, with whom he won a German championship, a German Cup and a German League Cup in the 2007-2008 season, as well as winning a title of top scorer in the Bundesliga (2007-2008) and in the Cup UEFA (2007-2008).
