Specialist Notes

Verve is an artistic and literary magazine founded in Paris in 1937 by the art critic Tériade. Tériade published 26 issues (single and double) between 1937 and 1960, printed mainly by Draeger and with lithographs by Fernand Mourlot. With the title of "an artistic and literary magazine appearing four times a year", Verve partially suspended its activities during the Second World War by publishing special 40-page issues on medieval manuscripts, a principle that Tériade continued to follow thereafter. The first issue of 114 pages features an innovation: full-page photographs printed in heliogravure, placed on the same level as reproductions of works by painters, in this case Brassaï. The original cover is by Henri Matisse, who also designed other covers. Born and developed in a period of economic difficulty, Verve received a warm welcome from critics and has been described on several occasions as “the most beautiful magazine in the world”.
