Amsterdam, Joan Blaeu, 1660. In 8°. Title page printed in red and black characters with vignette. Scattered friezes in the text. Burnishing. Brown calf binding with two impressed frames and friezes of leaves at the corners. Spine, with defects, with four raised bands and title and author's name impressed in gold. Red splash cuts. Signs of age. One of the slow boards.

De iure belli ac pacis (The Law of War and Peace) is a work by Hugo Grotius, a Dutch jurist, philosopher and writer, composed in 1625. Its main aim is to combat force by seeking stability and certainty in law, presenting the theory of just war and affirming the principle that all nations are bound by the principle of natural law.
