Information

A large and significant collection of heirlooms and documents from the Doria household, heterogeneous and multifaceted: a bone crucifix, a bag of glasses (the typical ones worn by Doria), three amusing caricatures in squares, various volumes: Some cards of gallant erudition , Naples, 1959; Galanti lucubrations, Edizioni del Delfino, 1977, the proofs used for a subsequent edition; other extracts; The Song of Guarracino, Naples, 1933; a precious diary in elegant green shagreen with 33 lines and aphorisms by Doria on Fascism; an essay by Doria, Vincenzo Moreno , Naples, 1907; An unpublished letter from Vincenzo Monti to Luigi Serio , Naples, 1909, with dedication; dozens of beautiful and long letters from Orsolina Tramontano; a drawn postcard; a large collection of letters from Doria to relatives and an equally large collection of correspondence from friends and relatives to Doria, for over 200 letters.

Specialist Notes

"A gentle and benign God, Arcadian and sentimental, gave life to the Gulf of Naples and, infinitely wise, made it in the shape of a circle and barred its entrance with protective islands, and adorned it with safe coves and inlets, and gave it variety from the Phlegraean plain to the mountains of Lattari, and made the most beautiful flora grow there and the most impenetrable orange forest." from Of the circumstances, Homer and the Sirens , p. 152.
"There is indeed something to discuss about the verb camminare applied to the Neapolitan. Indeed, I want to say that the Neapolitan ignores what camminare means, while he knows very well what it means to stroll. The Neapolitan never walks, but always strolls: even if he is the most active Neapolitan, the most energetic, the most busy with business, the most lacking in time." from Del carattere dei napoletani, Il napoletano che cammina , p. 23.
Those who do not know Gino Doria, do not know Naples. He was its essence, its spirit, its voice, its smile, its irony, its sarcasm, its joy and its profound culture, which only Don Benedetto Croce was able to equal... it is no coincidence that they were fraternal friends. These papers of Doria give us back a man to his affections, mostly family, a figure who emerges - from the lines of correspondence with and from relatives - enriched with an even more human guise, outside the Myth that surrounds him to immerse himself in everyday life. It is impossible to give an account of this substantial set of memories, which would deserve in-depth studies because they open interesting keys to reading Doria's work and life. Dozens of letters to Orsolina, but also many to his mother, both from South America and from every other place in the world. And all rich in details about his condition, his life and that of others. With his usual clinical eye. But above all I would say that the green leather diary stands out, containing 33 jokes and aphorisms on fascism : a document to be studied in light of his declared and conflictual relationship with Mussolini, and of the providential friendship with Croce that protected him from the arrows of fascism. If this document had ever come out then.... the story of Biagino Doria would have been very different.
