Laura Gamba Ghiselli ,from a noble family from Ravenna, had married the Pesaro count Giambattista Zanucchi Pompei in 1836. The couple lived peacefully in Pesaro, where at least three children were born, Giuseppe, Edoardo and Pietro, until around 1850, when Massimo d'Azeglio (1798 – 1866), who in those years held the position of Prime Minister, entered their lives. of the Kingdom of Sardinia and was one of the leading figures in Savoy politics, even if he stated that he did not feel particularly suited to public life. Laura or Laurina (as she was often called within the family), in the years she spent next to Massimo in his homes, including the beloved villa in Cannero on Lake Maggiore, was a calming and reassuring figure.
