Specialist Notes

The women's magazine "Lidel" was born in May 1919, in a very flourishing context for Italian publishing, which had made Milan its undisputed capital. The luxury magazine was a means of disseminating high fashion and referred to a completely different type of audience than the rotogravure, to a woman whose high standard of living guaranteed a certain degree of cultural and social freedom, and of spending . "Lidel" can be subscribed to this press trend; indeed, it can be said that it represents an emblematic case. Its combative founder was Lydia De Liguoro, a journalist who remained at its head until 1923, when she moved on to lead another important newspaper of the period, "Fantasie D'Italia", the official voice of the National Fascist Federation of the clothing industry . The title of the magazine, "Lidel", was an acronym of the topics that readers would find inside: Readings, Illustrations, Drawings, Elegance, Work. Fashion, therefore, was only one of the many topics covered and discussed in the pages of the newspaper, which aimed to give space to even more challenging topics. An important change of direction occurred in 1927, when Gino Valori took over as leader of the periodical. The change at the top of "Lidel" was contemporary with an increasingly less hidden reference to fascist ideology. And this is how, in more than one article, we find the various bodies created by fascism or the Opera del Dopolavoro mentioned, or the skill of the government is praised, which was able to revitalize various Italian sectors, such as, in fact, of sport.
