Specialist Notes

The Saredo Investigation appointed by the Saracco government in November 1900, on the "Administrative Camorra", is a document of colossal dimensions which analyzes for the first time the phenomena of corruption and criminal infiltration within the Public Administrations. It was created by a Ligurian magistrate, Giuseppe Saredo, who in two years carried out a mammoth task: reviewing, one by one, the accounts and relations between the Municipality of Naples and the city, effectively managed by some members of the press , church, politics, crime and business that had created a power block that controlled any movement in Naples for 20 years. The commission of inquiry was born under timid expectations and with the prospect of obtaining little information on the bad administration of Naples, but it was quickly contradicted by the results achieved in just ten months of courageous, intensive and uninterrupted investigations. A "triad" was identified that managed the threads of a gigantic system of power in the city that shared positions, money and honors: the parliamentarian Casale, the mayor Summonte and the journalist Scarfoglio.
