Specialist Notes

Original edition of this well-known and important essay written by Galiani in collaboration with Bartolomeo Intieri, his friend and founder of the first chair of political economy entrusted to Antonio Genovesi. It is known that Galiani wrote the work, but the content, including the preamble, is entirely by Intieri; some traces of the expository line, present both in the Discourse on the usefulness of the sciences and in the Perfect conservation of grain, reveal the coordination between the two authors. The work consists of an introduction and 4 chapters: in the introduction satisfaction is expressed for the improved living conditions of people and the development of arts, commerce and agriculture; in the following chapters the following are treated respectively: the imperfect ways of the past to preserve grain; the use of fire to save it from insects without losses; the experiments carried out and those in preparation in Capua, in France, in Maremma; the description of the grain stove and the difficulties encountered in overcoming prejudices towards machines. There is no lack of description of the improvement brought by Intieri to a tool used by woodcutters, the palorcio, for the transport of overhead loads, also applicable to the transport of grain; the last chapter explains the difficulties encountered in getting Annona to accept the new machine; finally, accurate drawings of the machine itself follow.
