Specialist Notes

The manuscript based on official documents and personal papers, describes in detail all the activities carried out as President of the Grascia (branch of the Roman bureaucracy that administered the supply of meat, fats and oil) and represents a precious source for the history of economy in Italy in the first half of the eighteenth century. Camillo Cybo was born on 25 April 1681 in Massa, sixth of the eleven children of Carlo Cybo-Malaspina, duke of Massa, prince of Carrara, related to Pope Innocent VIII, and his wife Teresa Pamphilj, great-granddaughter of Pope Innocent sister of Cardinal Benedetto Pamphilj. Having moved to Rome at a young age for ecclesiastical studies, he studied at La Sapienza University where he obtained the doctorate utroque iure on 13 September 1702 and was then ordained a priest on 5 July 1705. President of the Apostolic Chamber from 8 December 1705, he became a cleric of that same Chamber and president of the Archives since 6 August 1707. Having obtained the title of Duke of Ferentillo and Ajello and baron of Paduli, on 2 December 1715 he became president of the Acque e delle Ripe, remaining in office until 1730. On 27 April. 1717 he was appointed president of Grascia. But the hardships entailed by the office, in particular the need to make frequent trips outside Rome for issues relating to the circulation of foodstuffs and their export, soon induced C., who was always in delicate health, to ask to be relieved from office. Clement XI accepted his resignation and, on 29 January. 1718, appointed him general auditor of the Apostolic Chamber, conferring on him the dignity of patriarch of Constantinople. He later held other important roles, including that of Papal Butler from 1718 to 1723. On 24 March 1729 he was created Cardinal. In June 1731 he decided to retire to private life. He died in Rome in his palace in Piazza Quattro Fontane from an attack of podagra on 12 January 1743.
