Specialist Notes

First published in 1761 and republished in English in 1762, it is a learned political and social reflection. Thoughts on intolerance, which is sometimes necessary (but the damage is caused by the emigration of Protestants); on taxes, which are less burdensome than poorly distributed; on the harmful celibacy of priests; on the necessity of sumptuary laws, even if 'the luxury that a small state loses enriches a large one'; on the duel, which can lead to the destruction of the human race; on the exemption of fathers from taxes, which would favor the population. Etc.
